Know all Men by these Presents, That

I, Bertha H. Vaughan, of Cambridge in the County of Middlesex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts in consideration of One Dollar and other valuable consideration paid by the City of Hallowell, a body corporate and politic, existing by law in the County of Kennebec and State of Maine, the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge do hereby render, remise, bargain, sell and convey and forever quit-claim unto the said City of Hallowell, its successors Heirs and Assigns forever, a certain lot or parcel of land situate in said Hallowell and known as the “Sampson property”, being bounded and described as follows, to wit: On the north by land of Ernest Luce and Land of George F. Wingate; on the east by lands of Mary Wingate, Lester Clark, and Florence Smith, and by a proposed way know as “Sampson Street”, on the south by land of Annie Page, Charles J. Smith, Samuel George, C.D. Colburn, heirs of J.R. Russell, heirs of Clarence Hughes and land of Charles E. Fuller; and on the west by land of C.A. Cole, George Dale, heirs of Thomas Bates, Ernest Luce and heirs of Herbert L. Heald, together with all rights of way to and from said premises, including a certain right of way from Lincoln Street as the same is now established.

Being the same premises conveyed to me by the Sampson Realty Company by its deed of warranty dated May 21, 1923, and now entered fee record in Kennebec Registry of Deeds.

The understanding between said Bertha H. Vaughan and the City of Hallowell, in consideration of said Vaughan deeding to said City the premises herein mentioned, is that said City shall own and maintain a “Public Park and Playground”, to which all the children and citizens of said Hallowell may have access, and use under such regulations as said city may deem proper; said premises being given in memory of Benjamin and Anna Harriet Vaughan, and it be known as the “Vaughan Field”.

To have and to hold the same, together with all the privileges and appurtenances thereunto belonging to it, the said City of Hallowell, its successors Heirs and Assigns forever. And I do covenant with the said Grantee, its Successors Heirs and Assigns, that I will Warrant and forever defend the premises to it, the said Grantee, its Successors Heirs and Assigns forever against the lawful claims and demands of all persons claiming by, through or under me In Witness Whereof I, the said Bertha H. Vaughan (unmarried) have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty-third day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and twenty-three.
